THE FORSYTES (2025)

“The Forsytes” (2025) continues the grand and emotional saga of one of Britain’s most complex families, returning to the turbulent world of wealth, pride, and moral conflict that has defined the Forsyte legacy for generations. Set in the aftermath of the Great War, the film follows a new generation of Forsytes as they struggle to redefine their identity in a rapidly changing world. The grandeur of their estates and fortunes contrasts sharply with the emotional emptiness that still lingers beneath their polished exteriors, and the story once again asks how much one must sacrifice to preserve family honor.

At the heart of the film is Jon Forsyte, the idealistic son of Irene and Jolyon, who has returned from war with deep scars—both physical and emotional. Haunted by what he has seen, Jon finds himself questioning the materialism and moral rigidity that have long governed the Forsyte clan. His relationship with Fleur, the passionate and strong-willed daughter of Soames Forsyte, reignites the old feud between their families, reviving the bitterness and heartbreak that their parents once endured. Their love story, fragile yet defiant, becomes the emotional centerpiece of the film, illustrating the eternal clash between passion and propriety.

As London transitions into the Jazz Age, the Forsytes are forced to adapt or be left behind. Soames, now older and more reflective, faces the crumbling of everything he once fought to preserve—his art collection, his reputation, and his sense of control. His uneasy relationship with Fleur becomes more strained as she seeks independence and freedom from the constraints of class and duty. Meanwhile, Irene, serene yet melancholic, represents a bygone era of beauty and restraint, serving as a quiet reminder of the choices that forever changed their lives.

The Forsytes 2025, Channel 5 review: This cheesy costume drama doesn't disappoint

The film captures not only the opulent aesthetic of 1920s Britain but also the psychological and moral decay beneath the surface. Director Tom Hooper crafts each scene with lush period detail and emotional precision, allowing viewers to feel both the allure and the suffocation of the Forsyte world. Themes of love, loss, and legacy run deep, and the characters’ attempts to escape their own history only draw them further into its grasp.

By its conclusion, “The Forsytes” transforms from a simple family chronicle into a profound meditation on time, inheritance, and the human need for connection. The film’s restrained yet powerful performances, especially from its younger cast, breathe new life into John Galsworthy’s timeless tale, proving that even in a modern age, the ghosts of the past still shape the hearts of those who try to outrun them.
