*Z-MOM* is a 2024 Cambodian horror drama that reinvents the zombie genre through the lens of family, sacrifice, and resilience. Directed by Kou Darachan and written by Bun Channimol and Sorn Sreylin, this film blends visceral horror with deeply emotional storytelling, creating a unique cinematic experience that stays with the viewer long after the credits roll.

The story begins with a seemingly ordinary family trip. A woman, her husband, and their children set off to a secluded island managed by a private corporation owned by a foreign acquaintance. At first, the island seems like a peaceful getaway, a chance for the family to bond and escape their busy lives. But this calm is misleading — subtle signs of danger soon appear, from strange behavior among the locals to unnerving encounters with wildlife.
As the family settles in, an alarming illness begins to spread. What starts with fever and confusion quickly escalates into full-blown horror as the infected begin to exhibit violence, ravenous hunger, and ultimately transform into relentless zombies. Chaos erupts, and the dream vacation quickly collapses into a nightmare. In the ensuing panic, the husband is bitten and tragically becomes one of the undead.
Despite her grief, the mother manages to escape with her infant child, seeking shelter in an abandoned facility. There she meets other survivors, including a group of scientists who explain that the outbreak resulted from an experiment meant to enhance human resilience. Instead, the virus mutated uncontrollably, creating the terrifying outbreak that now engulfs the island.
Heartbreak deepens when her infant also shows signs of infection and eventually succumbs. In a poignant and gut-wrenching moment, she considers giving up and becoming like her lost family by allowing herself to be bitten. But as the infection begins to take hold, she experiences vivid memories of her loved ones, reigniting a spark of hope and determination within her.
With this rare immunity identified by the scientists, she resists the transformation and instead becomes a symbol of defiance. She leads missions to save other survivors, fighting not just for her own survival but for the chance to restore some semblance of humanity in a world overrun by the undead. Throughout the film, *Z-MOM* explores the lengths a mother will go to protect her family and others, blending horror with powerful emotional depth.
The movie was released in Cambodia on August 15, 2024, and later premiered internationally, introducing global audiences to a distinctly Cambodian take on the zombie apocalypse story.
