The North Water (2021)

Set in the brutal world of 19th-century Arctic whaling, *The North Water* follows Patrick Sumner, a disgraced former army surgeon who joins a whaling expedition as a way to escape the shadows of his past. Hoping the long journey into the frozen North will offer him a chance at redemption, Sumner instead discovers that the ship he boards, the Volunteer, is filled with men driven by desperation, greed, and violence. From his first moments aboard, he senses an unsettling tension, particularly surrounding a harpooner named Henry Drax, whose cold, predatory nature casts a dark cloud over the entire crew.

As the voyage progresses, Sumner begins to observe Drax more closely and becomes deeply disturbed by his cruelty and lack of conscience. Drax is a man shaped entirely by brutality, living by instinct and impulse, and he quickly emerges as the greatest threat on the ship. While the crew battles harsh weather, scarce resources, and the unforgiving ice, Sumner grapples internally with the fear that Drax’s presence could lead to catastrophe. The claustrophobic atmosphere of the ship only intensifies the dread as strange events and violent acts begin to unfold.

When a sinister plan masterminded by the ship’s captain comes to light, Sumner realizes that the voyage has never been about whaling at all. Instead, the men have been unknowingly pulled into a dangerous insurance fraud scheme that puts all their lives at risk. Betrayal, murder, and treachery quickly take hold as the Volunteer becomes trapped in the ice, leaving the crew abandoned in one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth.

Stranded in the Arctic’s endless darkness, Sumner is forced into a brutal fight for survival. Starvation, freezing temperatures, and the threat of madness close in on the remaining men, while Drax prowls among them like a beast waiting for the right moment to strike. The struggle becomes as much psychological as physical, pushing Sumner to confront the darker parts of his own nature.

The North Water' TV Review

The inevitable confrontation between Sumner and Drax emerges as the story’s grim centerpiece, revealing how two men shaped by different kinds of suffering collide when stripped of society’s protections. Their conflict unfolds against the haunting beauty of the Arctic, a landscape that mirrors the savagery and silence within them.

By the time the ordeal ends, Sumner’s journey becomes one of painful transformation. What began as a search for redemption becomes a test of moral endurance, leaving him forever marked by the unforgiving world of *The North Water* and the monstrous realities he witnesses within both man and nature.
