The Hippopotamus (2025)

The Hippopotamus (2025) follows the eccentric and once-famous poet Ted Wallace as he is reluctantly drawn back into a world he thought he had long escaped. After years of fading public relevance, Ted is living in a haze of cynicism and alcohol, convinced that art, inspiration, and meaning have abandoned him. His life takes an unexpected turn when he is asked by a wealthy old friend to investigate a series of supposed “miracles” occurring on a secluded country estate. Though Ted initially dismisses the request as absurd, the promise of purpose—and the chance to escape his stagnant routine—pushes him to accept.

Upon arriving at Swafford Hall, Ted is quickly immersed in an atmosphere of secrecy and whispers. The estate is filled with guests who speak in half-truths, servants who seem to know more than they say, and an inexplicable tension that hangs over the grounds. Central to the mystery is David, the teenage son of Ted’s old friend, whose presence seems to inspire strange events: sudden healings, moments of prophetic insight, and experiences the guests believe to be divine. Ted, however, refuses to believe anything supernatural could be at play.

As he observes more inexplicable incidents, Ted’s skepticism sharpens. He becomes determined to uncover the human motivations and illusions behind the so-called miracles. His investigation leads him to question the stories people tell themselves—about faith, family, and the desperate need to feel special. The more he uncovers, the more he realizes that the mystery surrounding David is tangled with emotional wounds, hidden desires, and the fragile pride of the adults around him.

Ted’s sharp humor and biting wit become both his shield and his tool as he digs deeper, confronting not only those involved but also his own exhaustion with the world. He begins to see that the illusions surrounding him are less about trickery and more about longing: a longing for hope, for connection, and for healing that everyday life rarely offers. Each revelation forces Ted to reconsider the cynicism he has built his identity upon.

When Ted finally uncovers the truth behind the miracles, the revelation is both shocking and deeply human. It dismantles the façade of magic but reveals something far more meaningful: the painful vulnerability that sits beneath people’s attempts to create wonder. In the end, Ted emerges not transformed, but softened—carrying with him a renewed, if cautious, belief in the flawed beauty of people and the strange ways they search for meaning.

The Hippopotamus (2025) becomes a blend of mystery, dark comedy, and introspection, inviting the audience to question the nature of truth and the quiet miracles found not in the supernatural, but in human imperfection.
